Items you need: water-tight container, fresh water, cuttings and lots of light
Step 1
To propagate any of our string varieties on this site in water is easy. Root growth is naturally going to be quicker in the Summer months, but you can try this method at any time of the year. You first need to cut off a small section of the vine (for example on the String of Hearts) c.2cm or you may prefer to try propagating a single leaf that has fallen off your plant (pea / pearl / coin).
Step 2
Fill a suitable receptacle with clean tepid water. In line with our approach to sustainability perhaps try re-using an empty plastic yoghurt pot or packaging from microwavable vegetables or a glass jar?
Step 3
Place your required cuttings in the water (they may float on the surface) and keep a watchful eye over the coming days and weeks. You may find the process speeds up with a water change every three days. Place your cuttings on a window sill in full ambient light.
Step 4
If propagation in water is successful you will start to see small white roots appearing from your cuttings. The different varieties will have a different growth rate and element of success. Please be prepared that not all cuttings will propagate.
Step 5
Once you have roots you can remove your cutting from water and plant either in the same pot as your master plant, to encourage a fuller-looking plant; or instead select a different pot ensuring it is on the smaller size – we recommend using a pot with 6cm diameter. The string varieties prefer pot sizes to just be larger than the roots. To save on purchasing a cutting pot why not add drainage holes to an item of everyday recycling and celebrate the new plant life and focus on re-use. You need to be prepared at this stage for the roots not to take once you have removed from the water. During the Winter months, propagation in water may take longer, to encourage a stronger root to form.
Step 6
Once potted follow our ongoing care instructions to encourage healthy and optimum growing conditions.
