String of Hearts
Ceropegia Woodii

Easy to grow
Easy to care for
No prior experience required

Originates

South Africa but has become an interesting feature in UK homes.

Overview

This semi-succulent takes its name from its heart-shaped leaves. A fast-growing house plant that has long trailing vines which in UK Summer months produces a pink flower around an inch long. The leaves are heart-shaped green or grey with pinkish underside.

Position

This is a plant which will thrive in a small pot on a shelf, window sill or hanging basket fixed from ceiling height. Its trailing hearts will cascade down in full glory. Best placed in warm bright light, but never in direct sunlight as could damage its leaves. Try to keep away from radiators.

Watering

Requires regular watering in Spring and Summer months, but less across Winter months in the UK. Always allow the soil to dry fully between watering as roots are susceptible to rot. As with other succulents String of Hearts actually thrive with less watering.

How to make plant fuller

The String of Hearts is easy to propagate to make your plant appear fuller. Cut one or more vines off under one of the nodes and place it in water to encourage the roots to grow. Once roots appear these can be placed back into the soil alongside your plant. Once mature this variety can display trails of 2 to 4 metres.

Repotting

You will know when your String of Hearts requires a larger pot or fresh soil, as it may stop growing, look weaker or less healthy than the previous season. A peat-free cactus or succulent mix is recommended to encourage the right level of drainage for this succulent-like plant.
